Maundy Thursday: The Last Supper – “This is My Body”
Scripture
"And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.’" — Luke 22:19-20 (NIV)
Reflection
Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is a pivotal moment in Holy Week. The word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning commandment, referring to Jesus’s commandment to love one another (John 13:34). On this night, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion, and demonstrated humble servanthood by washing their feet.
When Jesus took the bread and wine, declaring them His body and blood, He established a new covenant—not one based on laws and sacrifices, but on His grace, mercy, and love. Through this sacred act, He invited His followers to remember His sacrifice and to live in the fullness of His redemption.
But this night was also marked by betrayal. As Jesus offered His disciples the bread and cup, Judas Iscariot was already preparing to hand Him over to the authorities. The contrast is striking—while Jesus was giving everything, Judas was taking the price of betrayal. This moment reminds us of the depth of God’s love, which even embraces sinners and those who turn away.
After the meal, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where He experienced deep agony over the suffering He was about to endure. His prayer—"Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done" (Luke 22:42)—reveals both His human struggle and His divine submission to the Father’s plan.
The Meaning of “Do This in Remembrance of Me”
Jesus’s command to “do this in remembrance of Me” is more than just a mental recollection—it is an active participation in His life, death, and resurrection. When we take Communion, we:
✅ Remember His Sacrifice – We acknowledge the cost of our salvation.
✅ Proclaim His Death – We declare that Jesus’s sacrifice was for us.
✅ Anticipate His Return – We look forward to the day He will come again.
✅ Live in His Love – We embody His teachings, sharing His love with the world.
Heart Check
🔎 Do I truly grasp the depth of Jesus’s sacrifice for me?
🔎 Am I living out His command to love others selflessly?
🔎 When I take Communion, do I do so with gratitude and reverence?
🔎 Have I ever struggled with selfishness or betrayal, even in small ways?
(Take a moment of silence to reflect on these questions.)
Application
- Reflect on Communion – When you partake in the Lord’s Supper, do so with deep gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice.
- Practice Servanthood – Just as Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, look for ways to serve others with humility and love.
- Stay Watchful in Prayer – As Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, we are called to remain spiritually vigilant and surrendered to God’s will.
Holy Week Connection
On this night, Jesus prepared to lay down His life for us. The Last Supper was not just a meal; it was a declaration of His love, His suffering, and His mission to redeem the world. As we move toward Good Friday, let us remember that His body was broken, His blood was shed, so that we might be restored to God.
Prayer
"Lord Jesus, thank You for Your sacrifice and for establishing the new covenant through Your body and blood. Help me to remember Your love daily and to live it out through service and humility. May I never take Your sacrifice lightly, but always honor You in word and deed. In Your holy name, Amen."
