We are all accustomed to promises—both keeping and breaking them. Life teaches us that human promises are often unreliable due to forgetfulness, negligence, or unforeseen circumstances. A brokenhearted young lady may say, "But he promised to marry me," only to hear in return, "Yes, but I changed my mind." People change their minds and break their promises.
But what about the promises of God? How certain are they?
The Apostle Paul, writing about God’s promises to Abraham, tells the church in Rome:
“For the promise that he should be heir of the world, was not to Abraham or his seed through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith… therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed.” – Romans 4:13, 16
God’s promise to Abraham, first given in Genesis 12 and repeated in Genesis 22, declares:
"And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice." – Genesis 22:18
A promise is only as valuable as the ability and willingness of the one making it to fulfill it. God carried through with Abraham. Paul clarifies in Galatians 3:16 that God’s promise was ultimately fulfilled through Christ. The Apostle also affirms in Acts 13:32-33:
"And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that He hath raised up Jesus again."
Jesus lived His life on earth trusting in the power of God's promises. When He declared:
- “I am that bread of life.” – John 6:48
- “I am the light of the world.” – John 8:12
- “I am the resurrection and the life.” – John 11:25
He did so fully aware that His Father had promised to raise Him from the grave. More than 500 witnesses testified to the fulfillment of this promise (1 Corinthians 15:1-6).
God’s 7 Promises to Us
1. God Has Promised to Supply Our Needs
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." – Philippians 4:19
God has obligated Himself to provide for our needs—food, clothing, shelter, companionship, love, and salvation through Jesus Christ. However, this does not include luxuries that we may mistakenly consider necessities.
2. God Has Promised His Grace is Sufficient
"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." – 2 Corinthians 12:9
Through faith, we have access to God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8). An obedient faith allows us to walk in His grace (Romans 5:2).
3. God Has Promised Strength in Temptation
"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." – 1 Corinthians 10:13
Jude reinforces this:
"Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy." – Jude 24
Daniel experienced this promise when God delivered him from the lion’s den (Daniel 6:16).
4. God Has Promised Victory Over Death
"This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses." – Acts 2:32
Paul declares:
"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." – 1 Corinthians 15:57
Jesus’ resurrection assures our own resurrection and eternal life.
5. God Has Promised That All Things Work for Good
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." – Romans 8:28
Even when life’s trials seem confusing, God orchestrates everything for our ultimate good.
6. God Has Promised Salvation Through Christ
"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." – Mark 16:16
"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." – Acts 2:38
7. God Has Promised Eternal Life
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." – John 10:27-28
Let us live so that these promises of God may be ours.
Some of God’s Wonderful Promises
- “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
- “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28-29
- “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
- “From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” – Psalm 61:2
- “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” – Psalm 91:1
- “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:31-32
- “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” – Revelation 2:10
Conclusion
God’s promises are unfailing, steadfast, and eternal. Unlike human promises, they do not change with circumstances. His Word assures us of provision, grace, strength, victory, purpose, salvation, and eternal life. May we walk in obedience and faith so that we may claim these precious promises.
