God Works in Mysterious Ways

Life often leads us down unexpected paths, testing our faith and resilience in ways we never anticipated. My journey is a testament to the fact that even in moments of deep uncertainty, there is a greater plan at work.

It all started with a moment of overwhelming frustration that I found myself handing in my resignation letter, leaving my desk immediately, and walking out without a second thought. I didn’t know where I was going—I barely even remembered the journey from my office to home. A flood of questions filled my mind: Do I take back my letter? Do I ask for time to reflect? Should I go back? How will I pay my bills? What about my wife and kids? It was as if I had stepped from a bright, familiar world into an unknown, dense jungle.

That night was long. I couldn’t sleep, only staring into the darkness, analyzing all the angles, options, and uncertainties. I prayed for guidance. "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken." (Psalm 55:22) By morning, after my wife had left for work and my kids had gone to school, I sat in the silence of an empty house with no idea what to do next. Calls from colleagues came in—words of encouragement, advice to reconsider, suggestions for a transfer. But deep down, I knew I was never going back. That was the last time I was going to be employed… or so I thought.

A New Routine, A New Perspective

With no clear direction ahead, I had to redefine what my days looked like. I started making my own routines at home, giving myself tasks just to stay busy while resisting the temptation to update my CV and jump back into office life. The biggest blessing in disguise was the time I got to spend with my kids. I was there for them in the mornings before school, in the evenings going through their homework, and on weekends. When school closed, I was amazed to see their performance—both had made it into the top three of their respective classes! "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) Spending time with them made me realize something profound—kids need more than just good grades; they need guidance, mentorship, and someone to teach them how to think critically.

A Side Hustle Begins

Time passed, and still, I had no solid business in sight. I kept praying. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6) Eventually, I got a Suzuki Alto and ventured into online taxi services. The first day, I was ready to drive, but before I even got started, I received too many offers from drivers looking for work. I hired one, effectively sending myself back to the house again. Soon after, I got a second Alto, and the same cycle repeated. Managing the business was hectic—tracking payments, dealing with breakdowns, handling drivers—but it kept me occupied and taught me valuable lessons about running a business.

The Unexpected Call That Changed Everything

One afternoon, my phone rang. I almost didn’t pick up, assuming it was another driver issue. But on the other end was an unexpected voice.

“Hi, hope you are well. Remember that online interview you did last year at XYZ Company? We would like you to come for a physical interview tomorrow.”

I was in shock. I had completely forgotten about that interview, and I had never formally applied for the job. Yet, here was an opportunity knocking at my door, months after I had walked away from my previous role. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) Truly, God works in mysterious ways.

Sure enough, I went for the interview, and within a month, I was back in the corporate world. My CV had a six-month gap, but that didn’t matter. I got a job I never applied for, and it all came from a former colleague who had moved to another organization and thought of me when the opportunity arose.

Lessons from the Journey

Now, two years into this new job, I look back and see the hidden blessings in what felt like a crisis.

  • I learned to face and overcome the fear of losing a job.

  • I started and learned to manage a side hustle.

  • I spent invaluable time with my children, strengthening our bond and understanding their world.

  • I realized the importance of relationships—never burn bridges, as you never know who might open a door for you.

  • Most importantly, I learned that setbacks are often setups for something greater.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)

Life is unpredictable, but as long as you stay hopeful, keep learning, and remain good to people, opportunities will always find their way to you. Never let fear hold you back, and always trust that God has a plan—even when you can’t see it yet.

No matter how dark the path may seem, there is always light ahead.

Stay hopeful. Keep moving. God is not done with you.
